Research Themes

Art, Creativity, Performance

The Art, Creativity, Performance theme addresses inter- and multi-disciplinary approaches to the practice and analysis of artistic production in the areas of creative writing, media arts, theatre, music, visual arts, design and craft. Research in the creative arts encompasses a broad range of activities including scientific investigation, cultural theory, performance, exhibitions, art works, professional practice, consultancy, and community projects.

This theme provides a unifying platform to develop opportunities for researchers across the ANU to investigate issues regarding the significance of cultural production with particular emphasis on its creation, meaning-making processes, design, and circulation. It also facilitates the exploration of the pedagogic, social and political implications of artistic production. 'Art, Creativity, Performance' seeks to build on the strong relationships that many of theme members have with national and international arts and cultural organisations and academic networks, and nurtures the development of new researchers.

Research strands presently include:

  • cultural analysis of the production and consumption of the arts
  • practice-led research
  • arts and human rights
  • the interface between the live and the virtual
  • technology, culture and creativity
  • intercultural, cross-cultural and postcolonial performance
  • curatorial practice and arts management
  • cultural policy
  • creative industries

These strands are fluid and subject to change depending on interests of members and the resources necessary to realise any particular project.
