Our Graduate Coursework students have the opportunity to learn on the job by undertaking an internship. Students may undertake up to 12 units of internship, which counts towards their degree and offers an excellent way to gain work experience. Internship courses are offered year-round, in semesters 1 and 2, and summer and winter sessions. The two courses may be taken over two semesters, or more intensively in one or two teaching periods. An internship is an exciting and stimulating way of maximising the graduate degree experience.
Who undertakes an Intership?
Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. They may be currently employed at institutions such as the National Museum of Australia (our funding partner in the internship program), the National Gallery of Australia, the National Film and Sound Archive, the Australian War Memorial, the National Library of Australia and the National Archives of Australia.
Or they may come from departments of heritage and the arts at local and national levels of government. They may be a volunteer at a cultural or collecting institution in Canberra or a member of a 'friends' organisation looking for a career change, professional development, or the opportunity to work toward the award of graduate certificate, graduate diploma or masters.
Our students are also younger people who come to the Australian National University (often from interstate and sometimes from overseas, particularly the USA and China) who want to study in Canberra as a lever into the national institutions here.
Or students may know our filmmakers and researchers by reputation and because of the practical nature of the internship and associated studies, want to train with them. These will include freelance and professional filmmakers, multimedia producers and researchers looking to extend their understanding of critical and cross-cultural issues in dealing with visual culture.

What is involved?
Students are required to spend between twenty and forty days with a host institution. The negotiated configuration can range from a full-time intensive internship to an arrangement of one day per week.
